Assistive Technology

Elijah
In September 1997, Elijah was going into the third grade without the skill of reading and writing. Eli lacked basic decoding skills, or the ability to connect letters as we write them with their sound as we say them. Often being frustrated with his learning disability, interactive phonic programs and other software specially put into his curriculum helped him greatly. Because of his seperate software, when his peers went to the computer lab for the first time, he was already familiar with all the functions! Now Eli enjoys working on the computer (as he considers it a game) and has a more positive attitude in school.

Felix
Felix was born with cerebral palsy. Felix has a wheelchair and walker to get around and also has tibial braces for his legs so that we can walk easier. Now twelve years old and loving school, he continues to speak about his obstacles. At school, he has his own personal laptop, which includes a voice-activated program that allows him to take notes in class and take it home to work on homework. Nothing slows him down, he continues to lead clubs and help his friends help others.

Pete
Pete became permanently disabled 20 years ago during his final semester in college and has many of the limitations of a quadriplegic and is bedridden. He has been using a Dragon Naturally Speaking software and a second type of voice-recognition software that enables Pete to restart his computer when it freezes. Pete also has customized computer commands that function as shortcuts. With all of this AT, he now controls his hospital bed, lights, TV, computer, and even the curtains! For the first time, he is able to turn on the TV without help! His new computer system meant new freedom for him. Pete completed is college degree and also has a part-time job writing for a Massachusetts Rehabitation Commission Newsletter. Also, a video he produced recently won  first place in a nationwide YouTube Video Contest conducted by the Assistive Technology Industry Association. (The goal of the contest was to raise awareness of how AT can change lives for the better.)
